Importance of Green Waste Disposal

By Isabella Strachan

As advocates for sustainability and passionate contributors to the Green Heart Fair, the Barrambin Project understands the importance of proper green waste disposal. It aims to instill this belief into the Brisbane community. Green waste comprises general garden waste such as plants, trees, and lawn clippings. Illegal depositing of such waste can seriously threaten primary industries, the natural environment, local livestock, human health, and people’s livelihoods.

Considering the environment, The Barrambin Project wishes to advocate for proper green waste disposal through our upcycling of greenery and conscious removal of such waste when the time comes. Proper disposal of green waste is tremendously important for not only the Brisbane area but for the whole of Australia, as correct handling of Green Waste can decrease pest infestations, diminish fire threats, and promote decomposition as a sustainable option¹.

The Brisbane City Council have fantastic local waste transfer stations situated across the Brisbane area for great accessibility to proper green waste disposal. The Brisbane City Council also encourages proper green waste disposal through their green waste disposal service on bin collection days and abundant vouchers for green waste disposal at local centres.

While the Brisbane City Council offer great options for depositing green waste sustainably, in the spirit of The Green Heart Fair and the Barrambin Project, we wish to advocate for taking sustainability into our own hands and applying useful actions at home. There are many benefits of reusing green or organic waste home wherever you can. Recycling your green waste by composting reduces waste to landfill and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions1. Composting can also produce useful materials that can be put back into your garden for improving soil health1. Lastly, reusing your green waste as a mulch around your garden can protect soils from erosions, can reduce the stress on weeds and plants and can help prevent water evaporation from the soil, ultimately improving your garden health immensely¹.

Applying little changes to your routine and functionality in the home, can cause significant differences to the land around you. Environmental consciousness can be applied not only in your disposal of green waste, but in all aspects of your life. One changed behaviour can start the conversation and action towards a more sustainable future.
