Deep Listening Performance

By Grant Mitchelson, Polly Chen, and Joanna Jiang

The performers present a contemporary dance performance that seamlessly integrates Chinese water sleeves with fluid contemporary motions. Three dancers take the audience on an immersive trip, producing visual poetry with circular and smooth motions that replicate the gentle flow of water streams and the soothing sound of rain sticks.

The piece includes a diversity of themes, including phases of improvisation in which dancers thoroughly listen to their bodies and the surrounding environment, as well as unison movement. Inspired by the delicate sway of hanging fabric on a tree, the dancers use waltz-like movements and sweeping motions, as well as aspects of slow, meditative movements in tai chi. The use of rain sticks provides an ethereal and soothing audio dimension to the performance, enriching the whole sensory experience.

The performance's aim is to inspire the audience to reflect on the grace and fluidity of the natural world, connecting with it via the imagery of dance and the captivating sounds of rain sticks. This unique and intriguing modern piece guarantees an extraordinary experience that will stay with you long after the performance.
